Meeting Points is the monthly meeting for all members of Purbeck U3A.

Our meetings are held in the Harman's Cross Village Hall on the fourth Thursday of the month (except July, August and December). We have an exciting line up of speakers for you to enjoy in 2024 (please see below).

The meetings start at 10.00am with refreshments (doors open 9:45am) and include a talk, PU3A updates and news at around 10.20am.

This is an opportunity to meet your committee members, socialise with other PU3A members and be entertained by our visiting speakers.

New members are especially welcome – just let us know at the door that it is your first visit and we’ll help with introductions.

There is a small charge for attending these events (members £2 / guests £3)

  • June's meeting - Lucinda Montefiore gave us a fascinating insight into the world of media and entertainment; based on her career as a producer of BBC Woman's Hour.

  • Our next Meeting Points is on Thursday September 26th and will feature a talk from U3A member Alan Neal entitled "Radiation and Marie Curie".
Marie Curie was more than just one of the world’s most famous scientists – her achievements in science and in wider fields make her one of the most amazing women we have ever known. Her accomplishments are almost invariably proceeded by ‘the first’. She was the first woman to receive a doctorate in France, the first woman in the world to receive a doctorate in physics, the first female professor of the Sorbonne, the first woman to win a Nobel prize (for physics), the first person to win a second Nobel prize (for chemistry). But there is more to Marie Curie than her extraordinary scientific achievements; her actions during the first world war saved hundreds of lives. In this talk Alan will introduce us to Marie Curie and to some of her contemporaries.

Alan himself is a physicist. He is a member of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of the Society for Radiological Protection (SRP). He has 40 years’ experience of working in the nuclear industry, initially in radiation safety roles and then in nuclear site management roles. In 1985 he moved to the UKAEA’s site at Winfrith where he remained for most of his career, becoming the Head of Site in 1998. In 2009 he became the Managing Director of Research Sites Restoration Limited, the company responsible for the management and decommissioning of both the Harwell and Winfrith Nuclear Sites. Alan then ended his career in 2016 as Site Director of the Berkeley Nuclear Site.
Alan has acted as a consultant to the Hong Kong government (prior to hand-over) on emergency planning, has given talks on nuclear decommissioning both nationally and internationally including in Europe, USA and Russia.
Alan used to enjoy running - but age has caught up on him! He still enjoys walking, tennis, music and travel. Since retiring he has been trying to learn to play the piano and play bridge with limited success!

We look forward to welcoming Alan to Meeting Points to start our new season of talks.
